Meet Alexis Ventura, the woman behind Inkscribbler.

We first met Alexis at a screen printing workshop she took under Andrei and Sheina of Hocus Screen Prints, and later learned that the Maker Force was strong in this one, as she unfolded a prolific portfolio of pointed pen calligraphy that branched out from pen and paper to brush and blank wall, to designs on various materials–from shirts to sassy watercolor illustrations.  Alexis is the woman behind Ink Scribbler.  Aaaaaand, guess what–she’s having a workshop with us on Basic Freehand Calligraphy this Friday night at 88 Loyola in Quezon City!  You can find out more and register here.

How long have you been making? What got you started?
3 years. I wanted to find a new hobby.

What’s your favorite medium? Why?
Ink using a flexible nib. Striking and versatile.

Tell us about your favorite projects.
The wedding invites of Drew and Iya would be one of my favourite projects. It was the first one I worked on after quitting my corporate job, and the first complete wedding suite I made. It was exciting because it involved a lot of first times. I also enjoyed the Chinese New Year project with Sofitel. I did an on-the-spot brush painting of a horse and painted Chinese zodiac animals for the guests. I only had several seconds to make something out of water and ink, but it was a lot of fun! The guests were really appreciative!

What’s the one skill you’ve always wanted to master/learn?
It’s not really craft-related, but I want to write well. I don’t mean this aesthetics-wise. I want to process my thoughts cohesively, choose the right words, get the message across clearly. I want to write, but I don’t think I’m good at it!

What are you currently working on?
Lots of weddings, some collaborations and a few personal projects

What’s your dream project? What have you done to make it happen so far?
I really love making wedding invitation suites. So my dream project is to make for my own wedding in the vague future. There will be a lot of pressure to make it really pretty and unique, but I’m sure it will be fun!

Aside from pointed pen calligraphy what else do you do?
A tiny bit of water-colour and brush calligraphy.

How does creativity influence the other areas in your life?
It inspires me to appreciate the little things, encourages me to take my sweet time.

Any advice for other aspiring crafters/makers?
Make something of your own and don’t be shy to put it out there.

What do you do to beat a ‘creative block’?
I sleep. Hehehe!

Give us 3 essentials you must have in your toolbox at all times.
Pencil, Paper and lots of erasers.

Why should people get their hands busy (and start crafting)?
It is a good use of free time. And ironically, the value of something handmade appreciates as our world becomes more and more digital.
